Davy Smits

My story

Digital Challenger – Construction & ERP

50s · Antwerp · Economist (Applied Economic Sciences – University of Antwerp)

Davy helps construction companies structure their organization and projects in a way that gives them long-term control over their results. Not by blindly implementing software, but by first understanding how the company truly operates — clarifying processes, maturity, and decision-making.

With over 25 years of experience in the construction sector — both within construction companies and with software vendors — Davy combines strong financial insight with a deep understanding of on-site reality. He has guided more than 70 ERP implementations in construction and knows exactly where projects tend to derail — and how to get them back on track.

His conviction:

“ERP projects rarely fail because of the software — they fail because of the approach.”

Or as he puts it:

“Software doesn’t solve organizational chaos. It makes it visible.”

As the son of a technical engineer, he grew up in the world of construction sites and engineering. He chose economics and finance himself — a combination that is now his strength: he understands both the language of the contractor and that of the controller.

For him, construction is not just a sector — it’s a world of its own. He feels most at home in organizations where concrete, steel, planning, and numbers come together — and where professionalization is truly needed.

Who Davy Is

Davy is a calm, steady, and connecting force in complex transformation journeys. He listens without judgment, creates clarity in tense situations, and knows how to bring people along in change.

He builds trust — both with executive leadership and operational teams — and quickly understands internal sensitivities.

At the same time, he is not a pleaser.

When something doesn’t work, he says so. Substantiated. Based on experience.

He balances alignment and decisiveness: creating buy-in where needed, making decisions where required.

He describes himself as a chameleon:

  • Yellow enough to energize and engage people
  • Blue enough to analyze processes with precision
  • And red when decisions need to be made

Where Davy Makes the Difference

Construction Sector DNA

Eight years active within a general contracting company, followed by more than a decade as an ERP consultant in construction. He understands the reality of sites, procurement, estimation, and project management from the inside.

Controlling as a Steering Instrument

Davy helps construction companies move beyond “budget vs. actual.”

He sets up project controlling that focuses on forecasting, course correction, and ownership.

“Controlling is not about looking back. It’s about having the courage to predict where your project will land.”

Independent Challenger

Not a vendor-driven thinker. Davy starts from the company’s maturity level and strategic objectives. Sometimes that means putting internal order in place before introducing a new system.

“You expect your ERP vendor to perform magic. But first, you need to get your own operations in order.”

Bridge Between Business and Software

Experience with KPD Bouwoffice, RIB mTWO/iTWO, MS Dynamics 365 Business Central, Odoo, and various integrations. For him, technology is a means — not an end.

“Software doesn’t solve organizational chaos. It makes it visible.”

How clients describe him

  • Down-to-earth, analytical, and no-nonsense
  • Strong in workshops and process analysis
  • Someone who quickly identifies bottlenecks
  • Connecting in approach, clear in direction
  • Not a consultant who only advises, but someone who takes shared responsibility

Or as one colleague put it:

“With Davy, we avoid the classic pitfalls and implement the right tools to truly support the business.”
