My story

  • I am 54 years old, live in Merelbeke (Ghent) and am the father of a son (20jrs) and a nice daughter (22jrs) who both go through their own way at the University.
  • "Masters in engineering (RUG) and "Masters in industrial management" (KUL) are my diplomas and in addition I have followed numerous courses, the last being "Digital transformation" at Vlerick business school.
  • My professional passions mainly consist of technology, , business, strategy and business models and human relationships.
  • In addition to my work, I am an enthusiastic cyclist (especially on hills and mountain passes) and sailor (470 and yachts). As a reserve naval navigation officer I have gained years of experience and enthusiasm on the mine hunters in the North Sea and beyond. I was involved in countless assignments for clearing mines and bombs.
  • Playing music is a way for me to relax. I have more than 30 years of experience as a guitarist with various large and semi-professional bands.
  • After six months of doing an interim assignment as a mathematics teacher at a secondary school in Ostend, I started working as a sales engineer at Omron Electronics, a company specialized in components and systems for industrial automation.
  • As a result, I have worked with many companies in my career, which has allowed me to develop expertise in various sectors. (at Omron the assignment was not only to speak to the customer in the meeting rooms but also to be actively present in the production, near the production lines, the warehouses and the logistics chains)
  • As a result, I gained experience and feeling with a diversity of people, production and IT environments and numerous business models). Omron did not sell its products all through dealers and integrators, but also actively did business directly with OEMs, sometimes making it dancing on a tightrope.
  • But this baggage enables me today to quickly get in touch with your business and business sector, so that I can think along with you, get in touch with your business sector very quickly and be able to switch on quickly.
  • After almost 20 years of being active at Omron (with the last assignment managing director), I used my knowledge to put various SME’s back on track as an independent interim manager.
  • In 2010 I switched to the IT world at Delaware Consulting where I helped numerous companies with the implementation of mainly Microsoft AX2009, AX2012 and DYN AX F&O and was also responsible for the AMS (managed services) department with a dozen colleagues where we supported about 50 AX customers and helped them with updates, upgrades, modifications and extensions.
  • In the meantime, I continued to act as a coach and mentor mentor for all kinds of questions for business leaders and I was active on the board of Agoria, Ubeon and Be-Systemic (a think tank around system thinking, where I also spoke on a regular basis at seminars).
  • In 2018, the switch to Oracle NetSuite followed with the assignment to start a practice in Belgium.
  • In October 2020 I started to guide SMEs in their change processes and digital transformations on an independent basis.

Olivier: Stephen is a quiet pleasant man, who is very attentive to human change and reflection. He is not afraid to step out of his comfort zone and believes it is important to be well prepared and deliver quality work.

Aspects that can describe myself are:

Systemic thinking.

Looking at things in their entirety and reflecting on the various components that influence a "system" and what the consequences are, arouses my interest. I am skilled in both "systems thinking" and "systems dynamics".

I often question things to allow deeper and broader thinking and obtain better results by problem-solving thinking.

Solution-oriented.

I like to have a goal in mind that I want to achieve with steps and especially a clear step-by-step plan. I prefer to realize this step-by-step plan with people who share my passion and creativity. My love for systemic thinking helps me to quickly gain insight into complex structures and processes.

Empathy.

I have a great sense of empathy and easily establish good and valuable relationships with people at all levels. I do have a hard time with people who are not "true" and address them about this because together we stand for the realization of a common goal. After all, I stand for transparent open communication and a no-nonsense approach.

Innovation.

I try to closely follow the latest trends and like to try out new things myself. I will introduce new tools that I like and prove useful to companies that can benefit from them with a lot of passion.

Technology

After 10+ years of being active in the implementation of Microsoft products, Oracle NetSuite projects and also smaller Odoo projects, I can say that I have a considerable knowledge of CRM, ERP and WMS software and also with all kinds of other applications that interface with ERP software.

I have no preference for any manufacturer or implementer. I am convinced that the transformation project must show which architecture fits best with the current and future processes of a company and that we must address implementers who can not only realize this, but who also have a real fit with the customer.

Result orientation.

Working out strategies, methodologies, and tools gives me a lot of satisfaction. Just like during my time at Omron industrial automation I could really enjoy looking at a machine or a production line that ran perfectly automated due to our adjustments.

I can still remember the time when I was sitting on a driving AGV at Daikin in Ostend and in the meantime adjusted the software.
